Sun / Sun
The Sun surname mainly derives from four lineages: Ji, Mi, Gui, and Zi.
The Ji-lineage Sun surname arose among the descendants of Prince Huisun of Wei, whose family adopted the surname from an ancestral courtesy name, with a history of at least 2,700 years. The Mi lineage comes from the descendants of Sun Shu'ao and has a history of 2,600 years. The Gui lineage began when Tian Shu was granted the surname Sun and has a history of more than 2,500 years. The Zi lineage is linked to descendants of Bi Gan who changed their surname while fleeing danger, with a history of more than 3,000 years.
After taking shape from the late Shang to early Zhou period, the Sun surname remained active in Henan and Shandong. After the Qin and Han periods, the Gui lineage became the main Sun lineage nationwide. During the Three Kingdoms period, Sun Jian and his sons established Wu in the Jiangnan region, bringing the surname's development to its peak. The first line of the Song-era Hundred Family Surnames is “Zhao, Qian, Sun, Li.”
Sun Wu's descendant Sun Ming was made Marquis of Fuchun for his father's achievements, with his fief in present-day Fuyang, Zhejiang; this formed the Sun clan's famous Wu Commandery prestige lineage.
At the end of the Spring and Autumn period, the Ji-lineage Sun clan moved north from Wei to Jin. The Gui lineage expanded from Shandong westward to Taiyuan in Shanxi, southward to southern Zhejiang, and southwestward to Hubei. In the Song period, Sun communities were concentrated mainly in Anhui, Henan, Shandong, and Jiangsu. In the Ming period, they were concentrated mainly in Zhejiang, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Jiangxi, with the center of distribution beginning to move eastward.
The Sun surname also includes lineages formed when descendants of Xunzi changed their surname to avoid the personal name of Emperor Xuan of Han, when Xiahou Po adopted his maternal grandfather's surname, and when Yu He changed his surname during the Three Kingdoms period. The 23Mofang family database records 711 Sun families across 29 provinces.
