The Qi-origin Tang lineage is associated with Yao and the state of Tang. The Ji-origin lineage derives from descendants of Tang Shu Yu and the ancient Tang state in Hubei; later descendants took the state name as their surname.
Zheng Qiao's Comprehensive Gazetteer: Treatise on Clans traces the Tang lineage first among the surnames and identifies Emperor Yao of Tang as its founding ancestor.
The six-volume Shanghai Tang Genealogy bears the hall name Derong Hall and is a woodblock edition from the 14th year of the Daoguang era of the Qing dynasty.
Before the Qin dynasty, the Tang surname was concentrated mainly in Shanxi, Shaanxi, Hebei, and Henan. During the Qin and Han periods it spread into Shandong, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Anhui, Sichuan, and Guangdong. During the Song, Yuan, and Ming periods, its population mainly migrated from the north toward the southeast and south.
The Biling Tang Genealogy records that Tang Shun Zhi of the Ming dynasty belonged to this lineage.
