Tuo / Tuo
Tuo (tuǒ) is a relatively uncommon surname today. It is found among both Han and Tujia people, with a wide but small-numbered distribution.
The origins of the Tuo surname are disputed. Proposed accounts connect it with the Xiong surname, a change from Du, the ancient Ba people (Cong people), or a change from the Tian surname; some lineages are associated with the Tujia people.
The Xu Tongzhi: Shizu Lue records the Tuo surname and notes the pronunciation as “Tuo.” Lu Rong’s Shuyuan Zaji records the surname in Guangxi and discusses its pronunciation and meaning; the Xing Shi Kao Lue records the claim that many Tuo families in Shu changed their surname from Du.
The national Tuo genealogy states that the lineage is rooted in Cizhou and gives Luoyang and Nanyang as hall names, identifying them as ancestral commandery locations.
The Tuo surname is distributed across Sichuan, Chongqing, Hunan, Hubei, Guizhou, Yunnan, Henan, and Shaanxi, and is said to have mostly migrated from Sichuan. In the second year of the Hongwu reign, Tuo Shouzhen and Tuo Shouzhu came from Sichuan to northwestern western Hunan by imperial order and later settled there.
Tuo families in Songzi and Baokang in Hubei, Nanyang in Henan, and Daguan in Yunnan are recorded as direct descendants of Tuo Wuchang. A Tuo branch in Yunyang, Hubei, came from a branch in Chongqing Prefecture, Sichuan, and registered its household after settling in Hubei.
