Tuo / Tuo
Tuo is a surname shared by multiple ethnic groups in China, mainly distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hunan, and found among both the Yao and Han peoples.
The Han Tuo lineage is traced to Rilong of the Yuan dynasty. One Yao branch traces its origin to Pan Renyi, who came from Qianjiadong to Tanghuangyuan in 1445 and later adopted the Tuo surname. The origins of the surname lack an accurate historical textual determination.
Tuo is a relatively rare surname in current use. It is recorded in the Xinbian Qianjiaxing, and the Surname Dictionary also includes it through a citation of the History of the Song. A Song-dynasty person named Tuo Zhan is recorded.
The Tuo surname's commandery affiliation is Chenliu. Associated sites include the Wuma Guicao ancestral tomb at Gengloujie in Daping Township and the Rilong-branch Tuo ancestral hall at Chejiao Village, Libu, Cangwu.
Rilong's ancestral home was Nanxiong in Guangdong. In 1313, during the Huangqing era of the Yuan dynasty, he moved to Zhaoxianli in Heyi, now Daping Township in Hezhou, Guangxi. His descendants are distributed across Hezhou, Zhongshan, and Cangwu.
The Ming dynasty included Tuo Shazhuang, Tuo Sheng, Tuo Zhao, and Tuo Daohui. Shazhuang was a tribute student who received the title of presented scholar; Sheng passed the Yongle gengzi examination; Zhao passed the Zhengtong wuwu examination and served as prefect of Xunzhou; and Daohui was a tribute student who served as a zhou judge.
