One branch of the Weng surname derives from the Ji surname and traces to Mount Weng, the fief of a son of King Zhao of Zhou; his descendants adopted the place name as their surname.
The Qing scholar Zhang Shu, in Xingshi Xunyuan, recorded that Weng Nan-yi existed in the time of Qi of Xia and was regarded as the beginning of the Weng surname.
The Weng surname has the commanderies Linchuan, Qiantang, and Jianguan, and the hall names Zishan Hall and Ciyu Hall.
Before the Qin period, the Weng surname was active mainly in Henan. During the Wei and Jin periods it migrated south through Anhui and Jiangsu, settling around the Qiantang River in Zhejiang; by the Tang and Song periods it had spread across southern regions.
