Origins
Three Main Origins
The Wu surname chiefly traces to the Yan, Zi, and Ji lineages. The Yan branch descends from Wu Luo of the Xia period; the Zi branches include descendants of the Shang king Wu Ding and Duke Wu of Song; and a Ji branch descends from Ji Wu, a younger son of King Ping of Zhou.

Historical Records
Early Attestation
The Spring and Autumn Annals records that King Huan of Zhou sent an official surnamed Wu to assist Duke Yin of Lu in attacking Yi, after which Wu sent his son to seek payment. This attests to the presence of the Wu clan within the Zhou royal house after King Ping’s time.

Research Notes
Limits of Lineage Research
The account that King Ping of Zhou’s younger son was named Wu because of a palm marking resembling the character has been questioned. Wu Zetian’s claimed Wu royal lineage still awaits further historical evidence, and warfare may have prevented some records and traditions from being fully preserved.
