The surname Xi was recorded among the seven surnames of the Cong people who lived in areas of present-day Hunan and Sichuan during the Qin and Han periods.
In Xijiazhuang, Puji Town, Zhangqiu, the family is said to have originally borne the surname Xi, changing it to Xi during the Jiajing period of the Ming dynasty because of the teacher Xi Xu; two explanations are given for the change.
The Clan Records sections of the Zheng Tongzhi and Xu Tongzhi both record the Xi surname under the entering-tone category.
The Xi surname is distributed in Wuqing in Tianjin, Longkou in Shandong, Qingyuan in Liaoning, Nenjiang in Heilongjiang, and Taiyuan and Changzhi in Shanxi, among other places. Genealogical statistics state that it has spread to several villages in Zhangqiu, several counties within the province, and areas across the three northeastern provinces.
Xi Xu was from Zhangqiu, Jinan, during the Ming dynasty. At age sixty he became a Jiangdu instructional official as a provincial tribute student, later serving as a teacher in Weixian and a professor at Kaiping Guard. His works include the Maoxing Collection.
