The surname is recorded in Zheng Qiao’s General Treatise on Clans. Zheng Qiao glossed it as descending from the 校人 of the Zhou Offices, while the Surname Research Notes, citing the History of the Road, recorded descent from the clan of the Duke of Zhou.
The surname is concentrated mainly in Luancheng in Hebei, Zhongmu and Gongyi in Henan, and Xinghua in Jiangsu. It is also distributed in Weinan in Shaanxi and Yunxian in Hubei, with scattered residents in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, and Taiwan.
