The Xie surname has two main origins, from the Ren and Jiang surnames: the Ren-surname branch descended from Huangdi, while the Jiang-surname branch descended from Shenbo.

Migration Routes

The Xie surname was first active in southern Henan. After Chu conquered Shen and relocated Xie clanspeople, the surname began moving south; by the Spring and Autumn period it had reached Shandong, Hubei, and Hunan, and one branch moved to Sichuan during the Warring States period.

Distribution in the Song and Ming Periods

In the Song period, the Xie population was about 400,000, concentrated mainly in Zhejiang, Henan, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, and Sichuan. In the Ming period, it was about 790,000, concentrated mainly in Jiangxi, Fujian, and Zhejiang, forming three major population clusters: Gan-Zhe-Su, Chuan-Xiang, and Yue-Min.
