Youxin State and Early Attestations
The Si-surname Youxin lineage formed Western Xin and Eastern Xin in succession. Western Xin was located south of present-day Heyang, Shaanxi, while Eastern Xin was established at Chenliu Town in Kaifeng, Henan. Eastern Xin appears repeatedly as a clan name in unearthed oracle-bone inscriptions.

Before the Qin period, Xin people were active in Shaanxi, Henan, Shandong, Hebei, and other areas. During the Qin and Han periods, the surname was distributed across much of the region north of the Yangtze; during the Tang and Song periods, it spread south of the Yangtze as well.

Genealogies of the Wanzai Xin lineage record that Xin Jie, courtesy name Keqin and sobriquet Nanpo Jushi, settled in Wanzai after visiting to worship his ancestors during the Jiading era of the Southern Song, and is regarded as the founding migrant ancestor. His descendants divided into six branches: Yan, Shun, Jin, Da, Chang, and Fu.
