The Xing surname is recorded as descending from holders of the Zhou office of Daxingren and taking the office as the surname. The Daxingren administered court audiences, diplomatic visits, and related rites.
The surname appears in the clan sections of both Zheng Tongzhi and Xu Tongzhi. Zheng Qiao associated Xing with Xingren, while Xu Tongzhi recorded it as descending from the Zhou office of Daxingren.
Qianjiaxing identifies Pingxiang Commandery, northwest of present-day Tongwei County in Gansu, as the ancestral commandery of the Xing surname.
