Origins
The surname has two recorded origins: one traces it to Xuya, one of Yu Shun's seven worthy friends; the other traces it to Hu Ju, a minister of Jin in the Spring and Autumn period, who was enfeoffed at Xu and became known as Xu Jianbo, after which Xu was adopted as the surname.
