Yan / Yan
The surname Yan is pronounced yán and has two principal lines of origin: Cao and Ji.
The Cao-derived line traces to descendants of Zhuanxu. Cao Xie was enfeoffed at Zhu, and the descendants of Zhu’s Duke Wu, Yifu, whose courtesy name was Yan, adopted that name as their surname; this line is about 2,700 years old.
The Ji-derived line is associated with the state of Lu. Boqin, son of the Duke of Zhou, ruled Lu; one of Boqin’s sons was enfeoffed at Yan, and his descendants adopted the fief’s name as their surname.
Lin Bao’s Tang-era Yuanhe Xingzuan cited Quan Cheng’s Chenliu Fengsu Zhuan, Ge Hong’s Yaozi, and older genealogies in adopting the account that the surname arose among Cao-line descendants of Zhuanxu in Zhu through an ancestor’s courtesy name. It also recorded Wang Jian’s genealogy linking the surname to a collateral descendant of Boqin who held Yan as a fief.
Before the Qin dynasty, Yan clans were mainly active in Shandong. During the Han and Jin periods they expanded toward Hebei and Jiangsu, crossed the Yangtze into Nanjing during the Yongjia era of the Eastern Jin, and then appeared in Anhui and Zhejiang. In the Tang and Song periods they spread toward Sichuan and Jiangnan, reached Fujian through Jiangxi in the late Five Dynasties, and entered Taiwan during the Tianqi era of the Ming dynasty.
The Liyang Yan Family Genealogy is a Republican-era wood movable-type edition associated with Liben Hall. It identifies the founding migrant Yan Rilun as a ninth-generation descendant of the Tang calligrapher Yan Zhenqing who moved from Huer Mountain in Jurong to Huangjin Mountain in Liyang during the Northern Song.
