The Ye surname derives from the Ji clan. Yu, a younger son of Boqin and descendant of the Duke of Zhou, held Dongye as his fief and adopted it as a surname; the Ye surname later emerged among descendants of the Dongye clan.
The Ye surname is included in Xinbian Qianjiaxing. Xingshi Kaolue, quoting Xingkao, records it as descending from the Dongye clan.
The Ye surname is found in Shangyi, Jing County, Huanghua, and Weichang in Hebei; Taiyuan, Datong, and Changzhi in Shanxi; and Panshi in Jilin, among other places.
Ye Chi was a native of Lu during the Spring and Autumn period. During the Zhizheng era of the Yuan dynasty, Ye Lu served as darughachi of Tangyi and is recorded in the Tangyi County Gazetteer.
