Yong / Yong
Yong, pronounced yǒng, is a relatively rare Chinese surname found among Han, Lisu, and Xibe people.
One branch of the Yong surname originated from the fief of a Chu official during the Spring and Autumn period. The fief was Yongzhou, whose old city lay in present-day Lingling, Hunan, and its name became the surname.
Among Qing-period Manchus, some adopted Yong from a father's personal name. The Xinjiang Xibe clans Yongtuoli and Motuli both used Yong as a Han surname, and the surname also occurs among the Jingpo.
The Zheng Qiao Tongzhi states that the Yong surname appears in Xing Yuan and that Liexian Zhuan records Yong Shigong. The surname is also included in the clan sections of Zheng Tongzhi and Xu Tongzhi.
The Yong surname is geographically widespread but small in population. It occurs in places including Qingyuan in Liaoning; Taiyuan and Yangquan in Shanxi; Tacheng in Xinjiang; Wuchang and Laohekou in Hubei; Pucheng in Fujian; Guanyang in Guangxi; and Wuchuan in Guangdong.
