Today, the You surname has a population of about 810,000 and is mainly distributed in Fujian, Taiwan, and Hubei; Fujian is its largest province.
The You surname mainly derives from the Ji surname. In the Spring and Autumn period, Prince Yan, son of Duke Mu of Zheng, was styled Ziyou, and his descendants adopted “You,” the courtesy name of their grandfather, as their surname; the clan of Prince Chengshi, brother of Marquis Wen of Jin and lord of Quwo, was also called You.
The You surname is associated with the Guangping and Fengyi commanderies. Its hall names include Fengyi, Guangping, Meixiu, Renhe, and Lixue.
Before the Qin dynasty, the You surname was concentrated mainly along the northern bank of the Yellow River in Henan. During the Qin and Han periods, Guangping Commandery in Hebei became a prominent You lineage center. By the Tang and Song periods, the surname had become a major clan in Fujian, and it entered Taiwan in the early Qing period.
You Ji was a chief minister of Zheng in the Spring and Autumn period, while You Zuo was a Northern Song scholar and philosopher. The story of You Zuo and Yang Shi studying under Cheng Yi gave rise to the allusion “Standing in the Snow at Cheng’s Gate.”
