Origins

Surname Derived from Offices

Two origins of the Yu (庾) surname are associated with offices: one traces it to the official in charge of yu granaries under Emperor Yao, whose descendants adopted the office title as their surname; the other traces it to Zhou officials called yulin who managed granaries, whose descendants were granted the surname for generations of meritorious service.

Migration and Distribution

Distribution and Migration to Guangdong

Yu descendants are found in Guangxi, Hunan, Jiangxi, Gansu, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Jiangsu, Shanghai, and Yunnan. One Guangdong branch moved from Nanjing to Guangdong during the Northern Song Yuanyou era, later settled at Yujiafang in Chayuan, Dongguan, and around the twenty-fifth year of the Hongwu reign moved to Guyong before branching to Qishi Village in Xianyong.
