Yuan / Yüan
The Yuan surname has a history of at least 2,600 years.
The Yuan surname mainly originated from the Gui surname. Chen state official Yuan Taotu adopted his grandfather's courtesy name as a surname, forming the Yuan lineage; in ancient times, Yuan, Yuan, and Yuan were used interchangeably in the written tradition.
At the end of the Qin dynasty, Yuan Gao, a descendant of Yuan Taotu, took refuge between the Yellow and Luo Rivers. His younger son Zheng adopted Yuan as his surname, after which the Yuan surname came into widespread formal use.
Yuan genealogies include hall names such as Runan Hall, Wolue Hall, and Dunben Hall.
Early Yuan communities centered on Runan in Henan. During the Han, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties, they expanded into northern China, the west, the east, and Jiangnan; by the Tang and Song periods, they were distributed throughout the regions north and south of the Yangtze.
