Xianbei Imperial Bestowal

The Yuan surname originated from the Tufa branch of the Xianbei Tuoba clan and was formed through an imperial bestowal. Emperor Taiwu of Northern Wei, Tuoba Tao, granted Yuan He the surname Yuan because he regarded the Tufa Xianbei and the Tuoba clan as sharing the same origin.

Migration and Distribution

Migration and Settlement

During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, ancestors of the Yuan clan migrated westward from Hulunbuir to the Qinghai region and established Southern Liang. In the jiaxu year of the Xianchun era of the Southern Song, Yuan Qianfu moved from Zhuji Lane in Nanxiong to Xiaoxiang.

Historical Figures

Yuan He, originally named Tufa Poqiang, was a Northern Wei official and the founding ancestor who received the Yuan surname. His son Yuan Huai served as Left Vice Director of the Department of State Affairs. In the Tang dynasty, Yuan Qianyao rose through the ranks to Remonstrance Grand Master, later served as Left Chancellor, and ended his career as Junior Tutor to the Crown Prince.
