Yuan / Yuan
Yuan is one of the Chinese surnames, pronounced yuān.
The Yuan surname has two origins, from the Zi and Jiang surnames. One branch descends from Wen, son of Yin King Wuding, who was enfeoffed as Marquis of Yuan and whose descendants adopted the state name; the other descends from Yuan Heji, a Qi grandee of the Spring and Autumn period.
The Zi-origin Yuan lineage has a history of approximately 3,100 years, while the Jiang-origin lineage has a history of approximately 2,500 years.
Before the Qin period, the Yuan surname was active mainly in Henan and Shandong. During the Ming dynasty, its population was under 10,000 and was concentrated mainly in Hebei, Shandong, Henan, and other areas.
Among 23Mofang genetic-testing users, Yuan-surname users are mainly registered as being from Hebei, Shandong, and Liaoning, accounting for 23.3%, 22.1%, and 16.3%, respectively.
Apart from the appearance of the Yuan surname among the Shanyue people in the territory of Wu during the Three Kingdoms period, no other incorporation of non-Han groups is recorded.
