Origins

Two Origins

The Zhan surname has two origins: one from a son of King Xuan of Zhou, who was enfeoffed as Marquis of Zhan and took the settlement name as his surname; the other from the descendants of Chu Zhan Yin, who took the name of Zhanxu as their surname.

Migration and Distribution

Historical Migration

Before the Qin and Han periods, the Zhan surname was mainly active in Henan and Shaanxi. By the end of the Eastern Jin, it had reached Fujian, and in the early Qing it entered Taiwan.

Song and Ming Distribution

In the Song period, the Zhan population was about 103,000, concentrated mainly in Jiangxi, Fujian, Zhejiang, and Anhui. In the Ming period, it exceeded 186,000, with Fujian becoming the largest province and the population center remaining in the southeast.
