The earliest record of the Zhe surname appears in the Southern Song work Gujin Xingshi Shu Bianz heng.
The principal commandery association is Xihe Commandery; the principal hall couplets are “威震西夏” and “易阐京房.”
In the early Ming, Zhe migrants from Pingyang Prefecture, Hongdong County, Zhaocheng County, and other places moved elsewhere; by the late Qing, their descendants were distributed across Henan, Shandong, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, Shaanxi, Gansu, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, Shanxi, and other areas.
In the Eastern Han, Zhe Yuan was versed in the Book of Changes; in the Han, there was Zhe Xiang; in Later Zhou of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, there was Zhe Congruan, whose descendants in the Song included Zhe Yuqing, Zhe Weizhong, Zhe Jimin, Zhe Kexing, and Zhe Keshi.
