One origin of the Zhi surname is the Si surname, deriving from the fief of descendants of the Yue royal family in the late Spring and Autumn period, with the fief name becoming the surname.
The Tongzhi: Clan Records and Yuanhe Xingzuan record that the descendants of the Yue king included the Zhi surname.
The Zhi surname has Nanhai and Nanyue as commandery traditions, and Nanhai Hall and Nanyue Hall as hall names, both established from the commandery traditions.
