Zhi / Zhi
The Zhi surname is mainly distributed in Henan, Shanxi, Hebei, and other areas, with an estimated population of about 120,000, accounting for 0.009% of the national population.
The Zhi surname separated from the Xun surname. During the Spring and Autumn period, Xun Shou was enfeoffed with Zhiyi, now Yongji City in Shanxi, for his merit; he was thereafter known as Zhi Zhuangzi and became the ancestor of the Zhi surname.

Duke Cheng of Jin granted Zhi Yi to Xun Shou, who consequently was also called Zhi Zhuangzi and became the ancestor of the Zhi surname.
Among the descendants of the Zhi clan, Zhi Yan's branch fled to Zheng; members of Zhi Guo's branch changed their surname and went to Qin, while others went directly to Qin. From the Western Han period, branches moved toward Guangxi and Hunan; during the Song dynasty they moved south because of warfare, and during the Ming dynasty they moved back toward their place of origin.
Under Zhi Xiangzi, the Zhi clan surpassed the Han, Zhao, and Wei families and became the strongest family in Jin and even in the Zhou realm. Han and Wei later joined Zhao in a counterattack; Zhi Xiangzi was defeated and died, and the Zhi clan declined thereafter.
