Zhong / Chung
The Zhong surname mainly has two origins: the Ying and Zi surnames.
One Ying branch came from the Zhongli state descended from Shaohao, with descendants taking the state name as their surname. One Zi branch was associated with Zhongli city in Chu, with descendants taking the fief name as their surname. Both branches have histories of more than 2,500 years.
Zhong genealogical records include hall names such as Guangyu Hall, Xingsha Yisande Hall, Shide Hall, Yingchuan Hall, Zhiyin Hall, and Suhu Hall.
Before the Qin period, Zhong was mainly distributed in Hubei, Hunan, and Shandong. During the Han, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties, it spread toward Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, and the Central Plains. During the Tang dynasty, it entered Fujian with migrants from the Central Plains, and became a prominent southern surname during the Song, Yuan, and Ming periods.
Zhong Yi, Duke of Yun of Chu, is recorded as a descendant of the Ying-surname Zhongli state.
Some genealogies have missing pages or volumes, so their lineages may be incomplete. For example, the fourth revision of the Huanggang Zhong genealogy states that generations one through five of the Zhangdian branch are incomplete and that another branch is unrelated to the genealogy.
Start with ancestral counties, villages, personal names and dates. Record genealogy titles, volumes, editions and catalog identifiers. A shared surname does not prove a shared lineage; compare branch records.
