One lineage is traced to the Jiang surname and to the Guzhu ruler enfeoffed by King Tang of Shang; descendants of Boyi and Shuqi adopted Zhu as their surname.
Another lineage is recorded as originating among an ancient southwestern minority: legend says the Yelang ruler was found in a three-jointed bamboo that had drifted into the Duns hui River, was raised, and later became the Yelang ruler and adopted Zhu as his surname. The account is explicitly identified as legendary.
