ZongZheng / ZongZheng
Zongzheng, pronounced zōng zhèng, is a compound surname ranked 423rd in the Hundred Family Surnames.
The Zongzheng surname arose from the Liu lineage. Liu De held the office of Zongzheng; some descendants of his collateral branches adopted that ancestral office as the surname Zongzheng, later written 宗政.
The Treatise on Clans in the Tongzhi records: “Liu De, grandson of Jiao, Prince Yuan of Chu under the Han, became Zongzheng.”
The surname’s ancestral commanderies were Jingzhao and Pengcheng. Small numbers of Zongzheng families remain in places including Xuzhou, Jiangsu, and Tang County, Hebei.
Liu De is regarded as the progenitor of the Zongzheng surname. He was enfeoffed as Prince of Hejian and posthumously titled Xian; devoted to Confucian learning, he collected ancient texts and established scholarly posts for the Mao Poetry and Zuo Commentary.
Many members of the Zongzheng clan later shortened the compound surname to the single surname Zong.
