Three origins are recorded for the surname: an ancestor who served in Min took the surname from the fief of Lian Township in Min; during the Tang dynasty, Lian He, originally surnamed Jian, received the surname after meritorious service in Li Ji’s campaign against Goguryeo; and some Lian families are of Li ethnicity.
The Genealogy of the Lian Clan records Dong He as the founding ancestor of the surname. The Comprehensive Genealogy of Ten Thousand Surnames identifies Lian Hengfu as a native of Jurong in Jiangning and Lian Ding and Lian Hui as natives of Pucheng in Jianzhou.
