Origins
The Feng Boling Descent Account
According to the account cited from Lushi by Xing shi kao lue, the surname is descended from Feng Boling, a lord of the Shang period. Feng Boling was of the Jiang surname and ruled Feng, giving rise to the Feng and 蠭 surnames. The source also says that 蠭 is now generally written as “蜂”; this is the source’s own graphic-form note.
Lisu Bee-Surname Tradition
The source says that the Lisu bee surname derives from the clan name “Bieba.” According to tradition, a young man asked a bee to send a message to a woman who had lost a silver ring, and they fell in love. Their descendants all kept bees in the mountains and were called “Bieba.” The source says they later may have adopted the surname “蜂” by meaning, or “封” and “风” by sound; it presents this as tradition rather than established fact.
