Wang Surname Origins: Ji, Zi, Gui and Multi-ethnic Branches
Wang is a multi-origin surname. Surname-level traditions must be kept separate from the documented ancestry of a village or family branch.
Ji-surname traditions
- The Prince Jin tradition is one of the best-known Wang origin narratives. Other Ji-surname accounts involve descendants of Duke Bi, Zhou royal lines and Wangcheng branches.
- Taiyuan and Langya are important historical research labels, but neither proves a modern branch's direct descent.
Zi and Gui traditions
- Zi-surname accounts connect some branches with descendants of Bi Gan; Gui-surname accounts trace through Chen and Tian lineage traditions.
- Founder narratives, branch founders and migration ancestors must be stored as different person types.
Later surname formation
- Bestowed surnames, adopted surnames, refuge name changes and surname changes among many ethnic groups created additional Wang branches.
- Preserve the earlier clan name, date, locality and source instead of forcing all branches into one lineage.
Verification
- Start with the earliest branch genealogy, locality, migration ancestor, hall name and generation poem.
- Keep conflicting accounts side by side until genealogies, gazetteers, steles or dated records resolve them.
